Visual Interest Through Pattern & Texture Layering

Visual Interest Through Pattern & Texture Layering

So, what is texture layering, exactly? It’s the process of adding multiple layers of texture to a room in order to create interest and visual appeal. This can be done through the use of different materials, finishes, and patterns. Some examples of texture layering include combining various fabrics, such as velvet and wool; pairing wood species, such as walnut and mahogany; or using stone and tile in combination. The possibilities are endless, and the results can be stunning.

In this living room, the designer followed the owner’s ideas of setting up a minimalist layout that wouldn’t feel dull. For that reason, the space comprises only the necessities: a sectional sofa, coffee table, two armchairs, and a couple of cabinets. Every piece is curated to fit a stringent setup in a cohesive way. The shapes are simple and streamlined in a neutral, low-key color scheme.

The real challenge was achieving visual interest without disturbing the minimalist balance of the room. In this case, the designer clad a part of the wall in perforated, grey-painted wooden panels. Combined with the textured dark ash-brown wallpaper, it conveyed depth and dimension, turning the initially bland wall into a prominent visual feature. Pattern & texture layering also helped to create a sense of movement within the room, drawing the eye around the space.

Juxtaposing the hard surfaces, softer elements such as rug and cushions established balance, rendering the overall atmosphere more inviting. The complementing palettes reflect in all decorative features through shades and scales. Finally, a statement lighting fixture elevated the glam factor and sealed this elegant composition, replacing monotony with excitement.
